Rosebud Reservation and Feed Lots

I headed south on Hwy 83 which goes from flat to badlands to hilly to flat to...for quite a ways.
I stopped briefly in Mission, SD on the Rosebud Lakota Reservation. The Sinte Gleska University is celebrating it's anniversary. I pressed on south to Graden City, KS past a number of feed lots filed with beeves ready to be sent off.

Murdo, SD

I stopped in Murdo, SD and stayed at the Day's Inn - highly recommend it. A good jumping off place to head south on Hwy 83. The Pioneer Auto Museum is a pretty big draw too.

Sadly...closed : (

One of the highlights of traveling west on I- 90 across South Dakota is stopping at the lovely Visitor Center/Rest Stop at Chamberlain overlooking the Missouri River. The Center has a ton of Lewis and Clark information and you can look out over the river from the back of a simulated stern of their keelboat.

Starting out....

Left Minneapolis on February 1 in pretty clear weather. Lovely rime on the trees as I headed down Hwy 169 toward Sioux Falls.

Mixed use zoning

As I travel I notice homogeneity, diversity and blends. Many planned communities are so planned that it is nearly impossible to find your way home - but then again - if penguin moms can find their chicks in the rookery..... Other communities mix double-wides, high-ceiling high cost homes and hovels within fifty yards of one another. Often these are communities "in transition" where wealth sadly trumps traditional ownership every time. There are many beautiful areas where big dollars have created an economy where people who have lived there for generations no longer can afford to do so.

On the other hand, the mix of rural and urban is a delight on Vashon - it blends beautifully with the landscape. There is caveat - them that got there first, got there first.
And hey - turkeys next door can be fun.

Walking around and stuff

There are a number of really good walks on Vashon Island - interesting, great views and good for the sole and soul. One such walk is around the Misty Isle Farm which is up for sale. Used to be a pretty big beef producer and now is on the market - big time. Regardless - a good walkabout.

Island Driving

Occasionally a driver will fail to look ahead to see if there is a sudden change in terrain.
This is an example of literally driving into a ditch. A Yale grad and
Alpha Kappa Lambda person to boot!
